Hair transplants are life-changing procedures but as with any procedure of this nature, there are side effects to consider.
While every effort will be made to minimise or eliminate side effects, it’s still good to be aware of the possibilities so that you can approach your recovery with as much information as possible.
A Brief Hair Transplant Overview
Prior to your hair transplant, you will need to meet with a qualified surgeon who will evaluate your scalp, take you through the details of your procedure and explain what you can expect afterwards. Your consultation is also the best time to ask questions and discuss any specific concerns with your surgeon.
There are two different hair transplant methods that can be used, one of which requires the removal of individual hair follicles, while the other requires the removal of a strip of hair from the back or side of the head. Your surgeon will take you through the pros and cons of each of these methods.
Your aftercare is incredibly important and following your surgeon’s specific instructions will ensure the smoothest recovery possible.
Hair Transplant Side Effects to Be Aware Of
Here are a few of the side effects that you will possibly experience following your procedure at Hair Transplants Melbourne.
Pain & General Discomfort
Your pain levels will be at their worst the first few hours after your procedure. There will be some pain in the areas where hair follicles were extracted and transplanted. This is because of the incisions that were required to complete the procedure.
Fortunately, over the counter pain medications can be used to alleviate any pain and discomfort. If for any reason you experience pain for longer than 2 weeks, it’s important to see your surgeon.
Swelling
Swelling starts to occur the day after your transplant, with the forehead and the eye area showing the most noticeable signs. Swelling will last for about a week and the severity of it will be different for everyone. You can speak to your surgeon about anti-inflammatory medication to alleviate this common side effect. If swelling persists for longer than 10 days, it’s best to see your surgeon as soon as you can.
Itching
Itching is a side effect that develops a little later on and it tends to affect the areas where the hair was extracted and implanted. Itching can last for up to a month after your procedure. Itching is a natural part of the healing process and while it can be irritating, it’s important not to scratch your scalp. Speak to your surgeon about a medicated shampoo that you can use to alleviate the itching.
Bleeding
It’s completely normal for your scalp to bleed on the day of your surgery, so this is not something to be concerned about. However, if your scalp continues to bleed the day after your surgery, it’s important to contact your surgeon so that he can check that your implants haven’t been dislodged.
Crusting
Crusting is also a completely normal side effect and is the result of dried blood and fluid after your surgery. It’s important that you don’t pick the scabs off as this could affect your results. Your surgeon will provide you with instructions on how you can soften the crusts and prevent them from forming after your surgery.
Infection
Lastly, without proper care, infection is always a possibility after a hair transplant. If your scalp feels hot and you notice small yellow bumps, this could be a sign that an infection has occurred. Antibiotics will be required to treat the infection.
