Addiction can come in many forms, whether it deals with alcohol, drugs, or even eating. People can become addicted to things quickly and it doesn’t matter how much money you have, how strong you think you are, or where you grew up. An addiction cause changes in the body, both physically and psychologically and makes it a necessity to continue using or doing the addicted activity. The addiction can cause problems with a person’s usual daily activities, as well as with relationships with those that you care about. With addiction in your life you can trust that your life will change dramatically and most likely, not for the better. If addiction is present and you wish to regain control over yourself and your life, consult a facility where they are able to tailor a treatment that help you learn tools to recover from addiction. A rehab facility will evaluate your status and determine how badly your addiction is. This will determine the course taken to get you back to better health, both physically and mentally.

Diagnosis

Many facilities will use a process called, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). This contains various factors that will determine how badly you are addicted to a substance. They include: lack of control, desire to limit use but inability to do so, time spent looking for substance, intense cravings, lack of responsibilities, relationship problems, loss of interest, dangerous use of substance, tolerance of substance, and withdrawal symptoms. A person will be evaluated along these lines and if two or three of them apply to the person’s situation within a year’s length of time, they are considered to have a mild addiction. If four or five of them are present, they are thought of as having a moderate addiction, and if six or more of them apply to your situation, the addiction is said to be sever. Measuring the addiction along these lines will help the facility determine how much time is needed for detox, as well as, how many one-on-one sessions and group sessions will be most effective.

Rehabilitation

Once a person has been diagnosed with a severity of addiction, the process will begin. The first step of this process is to detoxify. This process ejects all of the chemicals in the body that will drive to you to keep using. This part of the process can be very difficult, as some people will get very ill.

This also depends on the substance used and the length of time and amount consumed. The next step is therapy, where you can get to the root of the psychological reasons you may have turned to using in the first place. This part also provides tools and ways to help you stay away from the substance. Continued therapy is recommended even after you finish rehabilitation. The reason for this is because it is often very easy to turn back to the substance when times get hard.

The battle of rehabilitation from addiction could be a life-long process, but don’t let that discourage you. Even though sometimes it will be difficult, you will have a better quality of life.
