For people in their 20s and 30s, if they have lived a life with relatively no health concerns, it’s easy to not worry about living a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, health issues do not discriminate and can strike anyone at any time, which is why it’s imperative for twentysomethings and thirtysomethings to prioritize their health and work on bettering themselves every single day.

Here are a few tips that the average young American should implement into their life:

Go to the doctor

Everything we’re going to talk about is important — but scheduling and staying on top of your medical appointments is paramount. So many young Americans refrain from visiting a doctor or a dentist because they think they are healthy. And they might be… but dentists and doctors still need to be consulted on a regular basis. Just because you’re not dealing with chronic pain or suffering from a fever doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see a medical professional.

Attending dentist and doctor appointments can help you identify problems early on and will enable you to focus on bettering your life. Even if you look and feel great, make sure you’re going to your doctor and dentist at least two times a year.

Improve your diet

When you were 18 you could pretty much eat anything and everything. You could have bacon-wrapped burgers for lunch and dinner, cake for dessert, and plenty of sugary beverages in-between. Now that you’re nearing your 30s, you have to start focusing on your diet.

For good health, you should be eating a variety of foods (including plenty of fruits and vegetables), controlling your portion sizes, and replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats. It’ll be tricky at first, but with proper research and planning, you’ll start eating and feeling much healthier.

Focus on your mental health

You could eat right, work out, and go to the doctor once a week — but it won’t make a difference if you’re not prioritizing your mental health, as well. Stress does not discriminate and is a major cause of all kinds of health concerns. Make sure you’re getting plenty of rest, are hanging out with friends and family, and consider journaling to better keep track of your thoughts and emotions. Conversely, it’s important to take a few days to relax by yourself and do something you enjoy.

If you’re finding it difficult to stay positive and work on your mental health at all, it’s best to speak with a professional. Therapy is a fantastic option for anyone and can truly make a difference.

Avoid and stop unhealthy habits

It doesn’t matter if you’re a lifelong smoker or you just started — you can still quit and start improving your health. Smoking and drinking are obvious unhealthy habits that need to be addressed, but there are plenty of things that are far too common among American 20- and 30-year-olds. Avoid staying up too late, sleeping in too much, and staring at your phone or any technological device for too long.

Get out and get active

You don’t have to go to the gym five times a week or even at all if you’re worried about making payments. However, you can’t just waste away at home on your couch. No matter how old you are, you need to get regular exercise in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

It’ll be difficult at first, but as long as you keep at it, your body will be in much better standing. There are so many options available to you that promote physical activity: you can go for a run, golf, swim, bike, hike, join a recreational sports league, and so much more. Even walking for 30 to 40 minutes per day can help!

The average young person in America is probably quite healthy, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do everything in their power to ensure a long, happy, and healthy life. It’s not just about being healthy right now — it’s about being healthy (and happy) tomorrow, next year, and in 30 years. Good luck!
